When to DIY and When to Hire a Professional

There are some tasks or projects that seem easy, and you might want to just do it yourself (DIY).  Either you want to cut back on some costs, or you merely want to take the challenge in learning something new.   Either way, you need to know when to do it on your own and when to get help by hiring a more knowledgeable individual to do the task for you.   You must know when does a job call for someone more equipped to do it for you because you might miss on something very important, and any mishandling could lead you to spending more money instead of saving them.  Worse, it could lead to a scarier scenario which is doubling the expenses to cope up with the possible damages you might incur.

To help you weigh when to ask for help and hire a professional, here are some points to consider:

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT

In most projects that you need to accomplish, you will be needing some tools and equipment.   If you are doing a home renovation, your basic carpentry tools at home available might not be enough.  You need other special equipment and buying or renting them might just be a burden over hiring a professional with complete set of tools and equipment that can be used.  If you want to invest on learning how to use them, it would be better to buy your own set.  Otherwise, just rent the equipment you need.

Even a graphic artist has a complete set of tools, be it manual and/or digital.  It could be a drawing and coloring set, templates, a paid subscription to a special digital tool, or an exclusive access to a particular site.  If you’re just doing it once or twice, hiring a professional graphic artist would be better instead of investing on these tools.

SAFETY

Let’s say a good friend willingly lends his tools and equipment to you for free.  Will it be safe for you to use them by yourself?

Not only that it might be scary to try operating them on your own but what if you accidentally misuse them?  You need to replace them with a new set!  That would mean additional costs and delays on your project.

BUDGET

This is an important thing to consider.  Does your budget include a professional fee, or cutting your costs and doing it by yourself will really be a big help?

If you are working full-time, an additional project would be physically and mentally exhausting. Hiring a professional might incur additional budget but won’t compromise your health and other commitments.

TIMELINE

Aside from your budget, the next important thing to consider is the deadline.  So, the question is how long will it take to do it by yourself versus getting a professional to do the job for you.

When you are not even familiar with what you are going to do, it will take time to research and learn about it.  If watching tutorials through videos won’t be enough, you need to do some, if not a lot of trials and errors. Chances are, you won’t complete it in your target time and the output might not be that promising.

If you have all the time in the world to complete the project, then you can certainly do it all by yourself.  You can take your time to learn everything and finish it whenever you can.

SKILLSET

There are tasks that does not just require a basic knowledge or understanding of it, but also some level of expertise.  Enough skillset and experience are needed, and only those professionals can satisfactorily complete the job.  Take the real estate brokers or agents for example, anybody can sell properties but not everyone can be considered experts in doing so.  redfin

An experienced real estate agent can find you a better deal on Vancouver homes for sale, assist you on legal concerns and matters, or easily find a buyer for your property, since they have lots of connections and acquaintances.   They can easily match their clients’ needs and might be well-equipped with powerful technology to get you into the right home and save you thousands of fees when you sell.

Nowadays, anybody might be able to create a simple website, but only a professional and experienced web developer can manage and deal well with all the challenges that can go along the way in maintaining them.

CONCLUSION

With all these things you need to consider, it’s a case-to-case basis.  Some projects can be feasible to be accomplished by yourself, while some might just give you a nightmare if you insist in doing so.  It really depends on your needs, your budget, and your expected output.

  1. We have done a lot of DIY, but these are definitely things that you would want to stick with hiring a professional. It is important to be safe and make sure that projects are completed properly.

  2. This is such a helpful blog post! I tend to search on YouTube so I DIY when I can. But my dad is a handyman so he does most things for me thankfully, haha.

  3. My spouse is very handy, so he usually does everything himself. We hired professionals to install our new radiant heat flooring, and they did it wrong. He noticed their mistake right away, but it took about 2 weeks for them to come out and fix it.

  4. I have zero DIY skill so if it were up to me, I would always hire it out lol. The spouse has some skill though haha, so we take on small projects sometimes.

    1. This is such a really great and very informative post I will share this to my husband thanks for sharing this with us

  5. I’m always willing to hire someone. My husband is the diy’er. I just don’t have the patience. I would much rather pay someone to do the hard work!

  6. I tend to always hire a professional. I worry I’ll mess something up and then it’ll cost more to fix. So for the most part, I call the professional!

  7. Luckily my spouse is very handy, otherwise we would need a handyman for everything! I do think a professional is the way to go most times!
